Over the course of the last 17 days of cycling we've become very discerning of the different types of road.....gravel, dry sand, wet sand, damp sand, wet mud, pea gravel, rock, river stones, dried mud, grass.....the list is endless.
Here is a slideshow of some of the surfaces - it is by no means comprehensive and some of the surfaces may to the untrained eye look similar - to the touring cyclist they are definitely not.
The worst roads are deep sand....followed by large rocks. Deep mud is obviously impossible. The best are early morning hard packed sand. Dried mud is bumpy and salty mud bad for the bike
